Why you should visit Corfu over other greek islands

STAY IN PALAIOKASTRITSAS

We stayed at Akrotiri beach hotel and loved it. You will have the rocky beach (only for hotel guests), and infinity pool). For Akrotiri beach itself , you will need to pay for a parasol (10€ a day, but they gave us a 1.5l water bottle included in that which we were ok with).

HIRE A CAR

A must if you plan on exploring, but be aware that you should mostly stick to the main roads as the roads quickly change to very uneven and often full of holes, which can damage the hire car if you’re not careful.

THEOTOKY ESTATE WINE TASTING

This was such a hidden gem, we loved it. I googled if there were any nice places to go for a wine tasting and two showed up. One was extremely expensive, this one was 5€ for a wine and olive oil tasting. It seemed too good to be true. We didn’t book it online as saw it still had almost all the slots available. We showed up around 4:30pm and were seen to almost immediately. After a quick explanation of how they make rose, white and red wines, and how they make the olive oil, we sat outside, looking over the fields, completely by ourselves enjoying 3 well served glasses of wine and some of their extra virgin olive oil. This was so good George almost had to go and check the price! We left with a bottle of Rose and some olive oil

CAPE DRASTIS + 7TH HEAVEN BAR

Cape Drastis really does offer a drastic coastline! On the way there stop off at 7th Heaven Bar for further looks at the coastline – we went at lunch time and it was very quiet, but considering it was peak Covid-19 times I suspect this place must get quite busy! There is parking and there is access to the small beach you can see at the bottom.

PORTO TIMONI BEACH (AFIONAS)

Read my previous blog post for an in depth review/tips. Fantastic beach well worth visiting. I was surprised to find this was, in fact, not a tourist trap and it lived up to all my expectations!

MONASTERY BEACH

Along the coast from Palaiokastritsas you’ll reach Monastery Beach and a few other small beaches like it – busier but still nice. If you also drive up the hill you see on the right you will find the Monastery that gives it its name, along with some more epic views.

CORFU TOWN – OLD AND NEW FORTRESSES

If you want a day away from the beaches and sunshine, head to Corfu Town. It’s a lovely town to explore with 2 fortresses to visit. We stopped for a quick bite to eat inside the old fortress given that the views were so pretty!

AVOID CANAL D’AMOUR AND SIDARI

Or visit very early in the day maybe… We arrived in the afternoon and found it crowded and not pleasant. So much so that we just looked at it and left. To reach it, the way we found meant we had to walk through a hotel’s outdoor area and it was packed! Once we got there the water itself didn’t look particularly appealing. Added to which the area around it was full of small bars showing English football which shouted out “tourist trap”!

I appreciate, however, that you can still get nice photos, however, be mindful of what you don’t see in the pictures.

All in all, I really enjoyed Corfu. I suspect if I returned during a regular August, and not during Covid-19 times it may well be busier, however, I’m sure that just like any other Greek Island, it would still be worth visiting.

Something else I would’ve liked to have done had it been possible, was to get a ferry across to Greece Mainland and visit somewhere like Meteora (there are some day trips on offer). However, they were not running when we visited due to Covid-19.
